Sudurnes Comprehensive College was established in 1976 in collaboration between the State and the municipalities of Sudurnes. The school has a modular system, is progressive, offering a diverse curriculum in both classical and vocational education for students aged 16 - 20.
Sudurnes Comprehensive College operates a Center for Continuing Education where classes are conducted outside of regular working hours. The school also organises various courses and seminars in co-operation with enterprises and unions.
Sudurnes Comprehensive College is roughly comparable with tertiary level schools in Britain and the last two years of High School and the first two years of College in the United States. The final exam is the Icelandic University Entrance Examination which qualifies students for entrance to the University of Iceland and is recognized by most European and North American universities.
Sudurnes Comprehensive College is organized on a unit-credit basis. The school year is divided into two terms of 14 weeks each plus two weeks of examinations (terms run from September through December and January through May).
Most courses are two or three credit courses. Each course is given a three-digit number. The first digit indicates the placement of the course within a study sequence. A course numbered in the 100’s is the first course in a subject offered by the school and is eventually followed by a “200” course etc. The middle digit distinguishes parallel or alternative courses and the last digit denotes the number of credits.
